House Project files (final part)

Finally, the last part of my house project files. I would like to compare the before and after photos to let everyone see how major the changes were. It took around 7 months for this project to finish.

BEFORE:
This was how it looks like after turnover. I don't get why old low-cost rowhouses always opt for yellow and orange combination. I confess the look was not at all appealing and the only reason why I signed up for this was for the sake of investment. Something as source of additional income after minor renovations.
AFTER:
I requested for an all white facade. The brick tile accents are an ode to brownstone homes which I love looking. The trellis was our contractor's idea. I objected at first considering it doesn't serve any particular useful purpose but resigned as it looks good anyway.
BEFORE:
Being at end unit has its many advantages: more space and windows.

AFTER:
And so we did add a lot of windows. The whole terrace is akyat-bahay friendly, as I would put it so T and I are planning to have grills installed from the windows' interior. As you can see, the floor area is larger than the lot area leaving almost nothing for soil.
BEFORE:
The interior, all bare and dark. The window looks outdated.
AFTER:
With an all white interior, it made the room look bigger. Cove lightings were added as suggested by our contractor. We let him take charge in this aspect. I had reservations fearing the ceiling would look lower with all the drama but it turned out really nice.
The red bistro chairs were the first ever seats purchased for the house. Our dining set, which as of this writing, are yet to be finished. We had it custom-made from an indie maker (I'll blog the details later). As you can see, we don't have any furniture yet. We actually lived in this state for the holidays.
BEFORE:
The stairs were ugly. Period.
AFTER:
It went through major renovation and turned out awesome. Again, we left it to the professionals to decide what is best and modern. I would have been happy by just tiles but I'm way happier of the outcome. Looking into the details which can be seen up close, it is not really that perfect.
BEFORE:
There's no way we will have no ceiling for insulation, at least. The house is located in the island of Mactan. With the sea nearby, the heat is unbearable at long periods.
AFTER:
The master's bedroom and Amber's bedroom (inset photo) have high ceiling as per my last minute request. The rooms, as predicted, were small so the need to have higher ceiling to make it appear bigger.
BEFORE:
The kitchen is nowhere functional. The original house after turnover did not include enough space for a kitchen so we built an extension to accommodate for one. Inset photo was taken during the process of renovation as no before photo is available in my files. This area before the major renovation has grey floor tiles though from this photo, it looks bare land.
AFTER:
In keeping with all white interior, the floors were painted white using paints suitable for cars. The wooden cabinets are kept in brown-ish color to contradict the whiteness.
With the exception of Toilet & Bath doors, all are made of wood and painted white.
BEFORE:
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS: 2-storey house, no partition walls upstairs, no kitchen area, 1 T&B.
AFTER:
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS: 2-storey house, 3 bedrooms, 2 T&B, 1 laundry room upstairs, balcony at the 2nd floor, garage and kitchen area.

Considering the changes, the cost of renovation was higher than our expectation.
At the end, we're satisfied. The windows need rework, especially at Amber's room, because of poor installation work.
Though not located at a high-end subdivision, the community is gated. A guard goes around riding a bike checking the neighbourhood. Tanods (community police officers) do make rounds at night time so it's nice knowing safety is of priority by the homeowners' association. Two concerns I have: First, I'm still trying to get used to the location as it is quite far from Cebu metropolis but I'll probably get used to it in the long run. Second, due to limited space, some of our neighbours park their cars outside even though there's a parking place for rent inside the community itself. Automobiles have difficulty getting through the streets because of cars parked outside the homes.

This ends the house project files. It's been fun and a relief that it has been done. Now, I can focus on interiors. I never thought shopping for interiors is fun.

bucket list review

In February 2009, I posted a list of things I wish to accomplish in the future. For the purpose of checking whether I did something to make my wishes into reality, I am re-posting them.

1) EU trip. -- Check!
My hubby and I started the plan in July last year and even after my pregnancy came to our knowledge sometime early August, we decided to pursue the trip as planned. The plan finally materialized in September last year. Our trip, which was only good for less than two weeks, covered Netherlands, Belgium and France (everything was DIY, not a package tour). We have selected these countries because of their proximity to one another (Netherlands being our point of entry/exit). Though not exactly the whole Europe, it was not that bad considering the fun we had in spite of the limited time.

Skipping no. 2 -- I forgot what I wrote as numero dos. I do remember that I posted this list as a sidebar before.

3) A huge shelf full of my favorite books. -- Still in progress.
The shelf I bought last year is no way huge yet I'm happy to have filled it with my books.

4) Get rid of my braces. -- Check! I finally got rid of the lower part last year.

5) Write good poetry. -- This will stay in the list. I need to be extremely happy or wretched beyond words to do this.

6) New project - U. Not applicable. This is work-related so it should be deleted as a wish.

7) Release of my new passport. This, I realized, is not something to wish for. Renewals of passports or IDs should not fall under a wish list. Such errands are mandatory duties of a citizen.

8) Visit T in KR. -- Check! I did more than visit.

9) Watch PBA with T (he loves it, I'm tagging along.). Clearly, this is not my wish thus it should be deleted.

10) Visit Angkor Wat. -- Check! It happened in May 2010

----
And since there are only a couple of wishes left in my list, might as well add new ones.

1) Learn to play a musical instrument. Either I learn to play a guitar or piano.

2) Visit more places in the Philippines. It's about time to explore more local destinations because 'it's more fun in the Philippines'. I can only count in one hand the places I've been to outside Cebu, i.e. Bohol, Manila, Corregidor Island, Boracay and Palawan. I remember having visited Bantayan Island as a kid but that, of course, doesn't count.

3) Turn that dormant asset into an active one. Purely personal so I will not divulge much.

4) To be back in the workforce in 2013.

Oprah started it all

Two weeks or so from now, I’ll be turning 30. While counting the remaining days now, I am reminded of the list I made right after graduation –-- that list consisted of all the things I hope to achieve before reaching 30.

[Blame it on Oprah. She influenced me to do that list to begin with.]

I don’t have the actual list with me now but I still remember a few of them. I won’t be posting them here though -- but I did manage to achieve some. Having said that, I have no regrets, and so far, I have exceeded my expectations. I’m not boosting my ego here. Have I proceeded as planned, I might still be happy for having met it but everything would sound scripted and boring. The point is, there's no more mystery. It's not to discourage planning and let life work itself completely, it's more of planning and being open to changes that calls for it. I know, easier said than done.

At present, well, I still keep long-term goals in mind rather put them into writing just to lessen the pressure, lolz. I've said (to myself) to just let life unravel itself but I just can't stop from making a list. It's part of my personality, I guess. The die-hard planner.

But currently, I'm more into my short-term goals. These are based on what's immediate, probable and required. In other words, my short-term goals come as priority (ex. Learn to cook pinakbet or play a musical instrument; Have a baby; Travel more..).

Going home for a makeover, and will be coming back with extra pounds

T will be back in Cebu tonight so that allows me to have no one to skype with later.

(boring nights ahead…)

Will follow suit on the 29th (that is less than a week from now), so it’s not surprising that I’m wishing for days to pass by quickly.

*excited*

The last time I stood on Cebu soil feels like eons ago. And that homecoming was all because for our wedding (and also for my resignation from ex-company).

Heard it right. I got married May last year and we’re on our way to our first anniversary as a married couple next month, but we won’t be able to make it on THAT day. Therefore, we decided to have an advance celebration within first week of May before we head back to our barracks (read: respective work destinations). It is just fitting to go home on a Golden Week (a series of consecutive holidays in Japan dubbed as such) because nothing could be more golden-ish than spending a week of worshipping-slash-hating the sun in Cebu.

Other than our first anniv, I am soooo looking forward to everything homey. Like…

1.) Walking barefoot by the beach while appreciating the view, boys, girls(?) and the sun.

2.) Lechon baboy (roasted pig), Siomai sa Tisa, and everything Pinoy (slang for the word ‘Filipino’). My taste buds have been craving for those, and whatever kilos I’ll gain as an aftermath –--- aaaah..will have to worry later.

3.) Mani/Pedi. I haven’t been taking care of my nails and toes other than cutting them and removing unsightly cuticles. FYI: They don’t have pedicure services here (I think). Saw several for manicure services but quite hefty unless you’re a fan of nail art –-- cost would then be absolutely secondary.

4.) Haircut! Been deliberating on whether to cut or not to cut my hair since January. It wasn’t easy. I mean, considering factors such as language barrier (that may result in tragedy), the ability to pull-off the look, and cost-benefit analysis (it’s the Accountant in me, lol).

5.) My nephew, River. The last time I saw him, he was 7 months old --– quite heavy, adorable and passive, as most babies are. He turned 1 last October so I’m hoping he’s still adorable and not the boring type of baby who just stares back at you and says nothing. Well, boring is better than whiny.

6.) Dine at new restaurants in town.

7.) Our wedding album!! The draft was sent through email two months ago for our comments which I later found necessary because in one photo, T had his eyes closed that made him immediately reply to their email, lol. Of course, I understand the ‘seriousness’ of the matter because I would have done the same thing. It’s OUR wedding album which I bet our grandkids will make fun of.

8.) A lot of paperwork --- not something to look forward to doing but a MUST!

The list can go endless but I need to stop. I don’t want to put too much pressure on me (or us) to do these things --- for I only have a week. Besides, I just want to relax and get away from work for a while.

Today is about to end so the current stats are: 1 down, 6 to go!

P.S. T said "I'll be expecting your callS". Hmm..he's begging me to annoy him.

can't wait for Tuesday!

Though not everything worked as planned, I'm not complaining..because everything is working way beyond planned!

Ha! 3/19 ain't happening because I'm going 3/17!

Heard it right. Approximately fifteen hours ago, my new boss gave me the 'go' signal. He approved my 2-week leave. Other good news is that I'll start working for U-pj first of April! And another good news, the new boss sounds too kind!

Crossing my fingers that the cake is as good as its icing. Well, I don't mind the cake to be sweeter.

(God, I've never seen too many exclamation marks in a post!...There, I did it again)

Now, let me say..uhm..write..uhm..type these words. I. AM. ECSTATIC. The turn of events has been overwhelming.

On another note, looks like my plans for a looonggg break this May will not be this ------- long. More like this --- long. If not for the 'golden week' holidays here in Japan, I might not have any break on May at all. So, like any die-hard planner, I already booked my flight for Cebu 4/29 -- Just in time for golden week to start kicking.

Dreams are free, might as well dream big. And they better be realistic.

I often heard that in order to turn one's wish into reality, writing it down (the least) or shouting it out loud for the rest of the world to go deaf (the most) will add to the pressure of wanting it. To the extent, the want becomes a need.

As you can see, on the left part (just below my profile), I have listed in no particular order the wishes that I want to make real in the future. There are no deadlines because writing them is enough pressure to me, let alone putting a target date for accomplishment of every wish.

1.) EU trip! (with exclamation mark for effect). I had thought of it way back then but never really considered it as a possibility. When Fe (a former officemate and friend) went backpacking alone for an EU trip last December, the thought of doing the same sank in after seeing her beautiful pictures. No doubt , I got
-->jealous inspired. Other than that, I have always wanted to see the other side of the world. It's like I don't want to settle for what I see in travel books; I want to see them for real.
Skipping no. 2

3.) A huge shelf full of my favorite books. In progress. Though no huge shelf on sight yet.

4.) Get rid of my braces. I have been wearing them since August 2005. Though getting rid of them is still subject to my dentist's perusal. The gap, which prompted me to have them in the first place, is no longer visible. Other than that, I have to thank them (braces) for doing great wonders to my teeth and smile. lol.

5.) Write good poetry. I have a few compositions. But I feel that I have yet to compose a masterpiece. lol.

6.) New project -U! It's work-related and highly confidential, so I'm not divulging any details. And yes, I soooo want it to commence. Hopefully, beginning March.

7.) Release of my renewed passport. I couldn't count the times I vent my frustrations about it. I even wrote some here, here and here.

8.) Visit T in KR. This is ONLY possible once no.7 takes into effect.

9.) Watch PBA with T (he loves it, I'm tagging along). For those who are not aware what PBA is, well it's Philippines' counterpart of NBA. In return, he has to watch a Mariah Carey concert with me. He knows I'm one of her lambs, so he's left with no choice but to tag along...only if such concert is scheduled to take place near us.

10.) Visit Angkor Wat. It's all about the architecture, the rich history behind those walls.

yearend report - 2008

My 2008 was more on work, work, and work. Though i got to have a break -->just to get married, lol!

(1) got married last May.

(2) right after our honeymoon in Maribago Bluewaters, i traveled to S'pore! (the only vacation i had in 2008)

(3) after 4.5 years of employment, i resigned to take another offer.

(4) took the offer, better-paying job in JP *loveeeet*

(5) though married, still in LDR, lol. He in KR (no longer SG), while me in JP.

(6) turned down a site assignment in Thailand bec. of time difference issues w/ my husband. Thank God, the company understood my situation. I really thought my refusal would have affected my reputation.

(7) if 2007 was about me trying to revive my artistic side (and my drama queen days..ugh), well, 2008 turned out more about me the working girl and my love for photography =P
.

my hopes for 2009..and beyond.

(1) for DFA to release my passport (it's been long overdue...tsk, tsk)

(2) project Uzbe to begin. if not, Plan B should resurface.

(3) a better Philippines. Enough of the politicking. These people in public service should know better that there are far more important issues (ex. the global financial crisis that is affecting PI...and my passport!), than revising the Constitution, that require more time and attention.

(4) on something personal: to learn more about life. The world is such a huge book for me, so i do hope to explore other places, and experience their culture.
